I think our assessment practices are evolving and it is evolving into a more student-centered approach and our ultimate goal is to continue that communication with appearances  and I love standard space reporting B pause I feel that it gives parents and students the opportunity to know exactly where they are and it takes away the anxiety of an A or a what does that truly mean but when we take a look at some of our power standards and  say hey writing piece my grammar is off I really need to work on that I think it's just continues that line of communication between students and parents and teachers is a true reflection of where they are in that Continuum of learning  it breaks it down into this six categories of am I am I good at capitation in migrated computation or is that a place where I need work so it breaks it down into individual pieces I don't want of my favorite quotes to my students is our questions I ask is how do you know if it in there looking like I'm crazy I said one bite at a time so takes the  all of the standards that the state tells us that we have to do and it takes it in and we're putting it into bite-size pieces for them so we can look at it here how I didn't capitation here's how it did in Geometry algebraic thinking so that way you could see were strengths and weaknesses are better as opposed to a B+ oh I really hope it alleviate some stress for them I really do because China to a grade it's so stressful for some students because their grades are tied to you know kind of who they are and it's like 11 I want to be straight A student instead of like I want to be a good learner and I want to be I want to be able to you know understand things and I want my brain to work and you know instead of being cure facts about the content which is what we have teachers always want them to do there like I have to get an A and I'm going to play the game and I'm going to do whatever I can to get that a I really hope it alleviate some of the stress that students experience with grades and I hope that it free students up to say this content is really cool like look what I can do with look up potential career path I can take where as before I kept something was tied to a grade then they are not that you know they may or may not have ever discovered some of that I hope that students and parents see more of the student knows and understand what the grade really means sometimes it's difficult to know really why they got to be in a class and I hope that the standards-based reporting will really be more solid indication of what the students know from the course and have a better understanding of what the standards are for each course sometimes I think that's a little vague and  heron distance don't always know exactly what the standards are that's something student sorry that's something that teachers deal with on a daily basis but really sharing that information more frequently and more openly with the students and parents will be really important I hope that all of the stakeholders and the standards base reporting in this Reporting System it will be authentic and that it will be this is what my kid knows because grades if it can become very muddled what does an a mean what does it be mean and so hopefully by defining these we can say child can do this independently or your child is working towards the specific skill  I know as a parent I just want to know is my kid hitting certain milestones in doing what he needs to do and so often grades are a great area of will you worked really hard and I don't want to know if my kids working hard I want to know if he's so I hope that now a grade reflects what kids know and what they can do rather than are trying or all of these other extraneous factors so hopefully we'll be clear and that we can really look at a grade and say oh my first hope is that it's a better communication tool because we've been talking for several years now that grades really should a form of communication that's really all it is it's not a judgment on the child it's just a form of communication so that is my first hope is that we have this better communication meth and communication between the teacher and the parent on the skills that the student is has a strength with or needs extra practice with I also communication between the teacher and the student because now our students know exactly what they're being assessed on they know the standard that will it will be reported in there report card so that's a communication tool with them and if they are tracking it and they can see how this lines up directly with the standard they know what they need I'm too and what they're doing really well the other communication piece I think that will strengthen is between teachers because we have a very specific set of standards that were assessing and it's so I think it will open up that communication between teachers on writing common assessments and making sure that we're using assessments that really are getting that those standards my other hope is that it will relieve a little bit of the pressure on students are very lucky here at Zionsville Middle School that are students care a lot about their grades and we don't want that necessarily to go away but I think sometimes students you get very anxious about making sure that they have the grade and they have the grade so with having multiple grades I think it's going to let some of our kids really sign in areas that maybe if we were to lump it all together they might not get that a but maybe they get an A in one specific may it be in one specific area and they can shine there and we can really see the area maybe that they need work on as a parent a parent perspective I want to know what my daughter knows and what she doesn't know I know the current ID and they may get a grade make it a 75% in math class excellent that's not good enough for me as a parent I want to know what's my daughter struggling is a computation is it number sense is it geometry I want to know where she's struggling so if I got to see that's that's an average of of all her knowledge I want to know I need to focus and help her along the way I think with any student and any parent they want to know that detailed information and I think standards-based grading will allow them to do that pacifically with science I think you know hey if we have a just take Chemistry Grade okay great but if I say alright guys you know we're going to be talking about Malik types of reactions how atoms are arranged and they have a grade for each of those then student and parent and teacher will know where that that's too struggling and go back and see okay we need to focus here to get to Mastery but you're already at a match level in this topic
